Privacy Policy
Last Updated: November 27, 2025
1. Introduction
FilterTube ("we", "our", or "the extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how FilterTube handles user data and what information, if any, is collected when you use our browser extension.
2. Data Collection
2.1 What We DON'T Collect
FilterTube does NOT collect, store, or transmit:
- Personally identifiable information (name, email, address, etc.)
- Browsing history or web activity
- YouTube watch history or viewing habits
- Search queries or keywords you enter
- Channel names or video titles you filter
- Any data about your YouTube account
- Location data or IP addresses
- Financial or payment information
- Authentication credentials
2.2 What We DO Store (Locally Only)
FilterTube stores the following data exclusively on your device using Chrome's local storage API:
- Filter Rules: Keywords and channel names you choose to filter
- Settings: Your preferences (e.g., "Hide All Shorts", "Filter Comments")
- Statistics: Local counters for filtered content (stored only on your device)
- Theme Preference: Your choice of light or dark mode
chrome.storage.local. This
data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us or any third party.
3. How FilterTube Works
FilterTube operates entirely on your device:
- You define filtering rules (keywords, channels, content types)
- The extension reads the YouTube page content locally
- Matching content is hidden using CSS (display: none)
- No data is sent to external servers or analytics services
4. Permissions Explained
FilterTube requests the following permissions, and here's why:
4.1 Storage Permission
Used to save your filter rules and preferences locally on your device. This data is never synchronized or transmitted anywhere.
4.2 ActiveTab Permission
Allows the extension to apply filters to the currently active YouTube tab when you interact with the extension popup. It does not access other tabs or websites.
4.3 Scripting Permission
Required to inject content scripts that hide filtered content on YouTube pages. These scripts run only on YouTube and do not collect any data.
4.4 Tabs Permission
Used only to detect when you navigate to YouTube so filters can be applied. The extension does not read, store, or analyze content from your tabs.
4.5 Host Permissions (youtube.com)
Allows the extension to read and modify YouTube pages locally to hide content according to your rules. No data is collected or transmitted.
5. Third-Party Services
FilterTube does not use any third-party services, analytics, tracking, or advertising networks. There are no external API calls, no telemetry, and no data sharing of any kind.
6. Data Sharing and Sale
We do not sell, trade, or transfer your data to third parties because we don't collect any data in the first place. Your filtering preferences remain private and local to your device.
7. Children's Privacy
FilterTube does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under 13. Since no data is collected at all, the extension is safe for users of all ages.
8. Data Security
Your filter rules and preferences are stored securely using Chrome's built-in storage API, which is sandboxed and protected by the browser's security model. Since data never leaves your device, there is no risk of interception or unauthorized access.
9. Your Rights
You have complete control over your data:
- Access: View your filters anytime in the extension popup or settings
- Modify: Edit or delete filters at any time
- Delete: Uninstalling the extension removes all stored data from your device
- Export: You can manually copy your filter rules if needed
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Continued use of FilterTube after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
11. Open Source Transparency
FilterTube is open source. You can review the complete source code on GitHub to verify that no data
collection occurs:
